Dining at Disney

topic posted Mon, April 3, 2006 - 10:09 AM by  Ģıŋ
We're off to Disney in two weeks - our first time. I am wondering if anyone could give us some tips about where to eat. The Disney website falls a little short here. Do we have to go out of the park if don't want to spend an arm and a leg? And what's a must with my son? (he's four) Do we really need to make reservations in advance?

Thanks!

Cheapest place to eat with the best food is Earl of Sandwich at the Downtown Disney Marketplace. You can get made-to-order sandwiches on fresh-made bread for around $5 and sides like a cup of tomato soup for only $1. For dessert, head over to the Ghiradelli store (not the ice cream side, but the retail side) and there's usually someone handing out free chocolate samples to customers.

Unless your son really loves a certain character, skip the character breakfasts. Best breakfast values are the buffets at Fort Wilderness ($10) and Boma ($16), both of which are all you can eat. I usually grab up an extra muffin and a piece of fruit from the buffet and save it for a light lunch later.

As for attractions, does your son have any fave things or characters he likes? I wrote 2 Disney guidebooks, so I might be able to suggest some things. :) Otherwise, the best online resource is allearsnet.com.

And a final tip -- you're going to be here at crazy busy time. Make sure to stay hydrated and wear plenty of sunscreen. Dehydration and sunburn are two of the biggest reasons people have a bad time at the parks. Otherwise, enjoy! :)

This is so helpful! I have been on Disney's site, which lets you go through the the parks and mark favorite attractions, then you save an itinerary. It's pretty handy, but lacks a great deal in the dining department.

My son is a muppet fanatic, and was ecstatic to see Kermit on the Disney Trip planner DVD. I hope he is not disappointed. I've already marked the muppet 3D as a must-see, but I think he has his hopes up to see Kermit in person.

I wish we could have come at a less busy time, especially our first time, but it wasn't to be the way things worked out.

      Thank you!

    Gin;

We are heading down as well for our first Disney Cruise - we have been to the park about 20 times and still love it.

We have a six year old son and have been going to the parks since he was 18 months. If this is your first time, I would highly recommend the character meals (no offense to the other post) but my son loved it every time. If you can only hit one, try Chef Mickey's at the Contemporary Hotel. What we usually try to do is eat a big breakfeast, small lunch in park, and then a big dinner either inside or outside the parks.

    Have a great time!

Our favorites are Jiko's in The Animal Kingdom Hotel ($$$$), Chef Mickeys, Canada in EPCOT (China is best for fireworks), California Grill ($$$), Italy in EPCOT for outside lunch, France in EPCOT for desert, Mayan Grill in the Coronado Hotel - You really can't go wrong - outside the park we love Season's 52 on Sand Lake Road - I can go on so let me know any specifics you like and I will taylor my answers - seafood, steak etc...

oops, I just saw this latest post. Thanks for thinking of us! Actually on May 8 when you posted, we had already gone & come back, but the good news is, we dined just fine. I was worried about the crowds at peak period, as well as $$, but it wasn't too much of an issue.

My son seemed perturbed by the characters, they were a bit larger than life for him, so we steered clear of the character meals.

      Thanks!

    On a semi-related point:

One lesson we learned on our first trip was in regard to the Disney Dining PLan. With the plan, you get 1 Table Service Meal per day. Table Service meals are only available at places that more or less require a reservation. Make sure if you go on the plan that you plan out your trip and make reservations as far ahead as possible. We ended up having to work with our concierge for quite a while to fill out our dining plans so that we didn't lose out on Table Meals.

Getting reservations on the spot is nearly impossible short of "off hours"
